We were engaged to design the structures for four 4-storey apartment blocks, featuring 120 apartments. Because sustainability was a key consideration for our client and the Queenstown region, we suggested using timber as much as possible. The architect liked this idea and ran with it.
The apartments feature concrete on the ground and first storeys to comply with fire regulations, with the top two floors constructed from prefabricated timber panels by Hector Egger, an Otago based company that specialises in the manufacture of high-tech timber structures and prefabricated timber panels for residential and commercial building construction using Swiss technology. The advantage of this system is it reduces the construction time by around 25% and the walls arrive properly insulated and lined.
