SCULPTURE

Our sculpture engineering services focus on:
  • Structural engineering that gives large-scale artwork the strength to endure
  • Custom solutions shaped around material choice, site conditions, and creative vision
  • Early structural planning that reduces risk, delays, and redesign
  • Quiet, rigorous engineering that allows the artwork to remain the focus
Structural sculpture engineering that transforms ambitious artistic concepts into safe, enduring installations
Structure Design provides specialist structural engineering for large-scale sculpture and public art. We collaborate with sculptural artists, architects, and commissioners across New Zealand and worldwide to transform bold creative ideas into installations that are expressive, stable, and built to last.
Our role is to support artistic intent with precise engineering, ensuring each piece performs safely, weathers its environment and retains its presence for decades.

Large-scale sculpture designed to perform beneath the surface

Large-scale sculpture should feel effortless, even though it must resist complex forces. Wind, seismic action, movement, and public interaction all shape how a piece must perform. Structure Design manages these forces through precise, unobtrusive structural engineering. The result is an artwork that remains true to its vision while standing safely and securely.

Turning creative vision into buildable, lasting form

Great sculptures endure because they are engineered to perform, not just to impress. Structural understanding of materials and proportions allows ideas to take physical shape. This ensures each piece can be fabricated, installed, and maintained with confidence. The result is artwork that remains expressive while standing strong over time.

Sculptural structures that balance artistry and engineering precision

Every structural decision influences how a sculpture is seen and experienced. Engineering must support form without competing for attention. Structure Design applies precision where it matters and restraint where it counts. This balance allows artistic intent to remain clear, confident, and uncompromised.

Collaborative sculpture engineering from concept to completion

Strong outcomes rely on clear collaboration between artists, engineers, and builders. Structure Design supports the creative lead while providing practical engineering guidance. Open communication keeps scope, cost and expectations aligned throughout the project. This approach makes complex sculpture delivery feel predictable and well managed.

Fabrication and installation with dependable precision

Successful sculpture delivery depends on accuracy and coordination. Structure Design works closely with fabrications and installers throughout construction. Connections, tolerances, and sequencing are reviewed to protect design intent. This ensures the finished artwork aligns with both artistic vision and structural safety.

Custom engineering for unique sites and environments

Every sculpture responds to the conditions of its location. Wind, seismic forces, exposure and public interaction all shape structural requirements. Structure Design tailors each solution to suit the specific site from the outset. This ensures the artwork remains expressive, secure, and durable in its setting.

Engineered sculptures that endure and inspire

A well-engineered sculpture becomes part of its place over time. Strength and stability protect the form, finish, and intent of the artwork. Structure Design treats engineering as an essential layer of craftsmanship.

Frequently Asked Questions for Sculpture Design

Yes. In addition to projects across New Zealand, we have designed sculptures in the Australia, UK, Finland, Spain, Hawaii, and Singapore.

Although sculptures are often treated as artistic elements, structurally they are subject to the same fundamental requirements as buildings. Key considerations include stability under wind and seismic actions, durability in the exposure environment, connection design, and how loads are transferred into the supporting structure or foundations. Some sculptures need particular attention to damping of wind vibrations and prevention of fatigue damage.

We work closely with artists, architects, and fabricators to understand the intent and geometry, then develop a structural solution which follows that intent while delivering a safe, durable, and buildable outcome. Some sculptures will require Building Consent, unless an exemption is granted by the local council. We can provide advice and assistance through this process.

The bolder the vision, the earlier you should talk to us. We are happy to discuss your artwork at any stage - whether you have a concept sketch, scale model, or detailed drawings.
