Although sculptures are often treated as artistic elements, structurally they are subject to the same fundamental requirements as buildings. Key considerations include stability under wind and seismic actions, durability in the exposure environment, connection design, and how loads are transferred into the supporting structure or foundations. Some sculptures need particular attention to damping of wind vibrations and prevention of fatigue damage.
We work closely with artists, architects, and fabricators to understand the intent and geometry, then develop a structural solution which follows that intent while delivering a safe, durable, and buildable outcome. Some sculptures will require Building Consent, unless an exemption is granted by the local council. We can provide advice and assistance through this process.
