Across a career of more than 40 years spanning New Zealand, Australia, Nepal and the Pacific, Peter Boardman has become known for delivering innovative, practical and first-class structural engineering solutions.
Peter’s approach combines creative problem-solving with buildable, cost-effective design. He believes the best outcomes come from strong collaboration with architects, contractors and clients – working together to create solutions that are both efficient and enduring. Known for his ability to think differently, Peter often pushes boundaries where it leads to better, smarter, and more sustainable structures.
His extensive experience means he’s encountered and solved many of the same challenges faced by clients today. This depth of knowledge enables him to draw on proven approaches or develop fresh solutions that improve on what’s been done before. His strengths include conceptual design, construction engineering and strategic problem-solving, underpinned by a genuine commitment to teamwork and innovation.
Peter founded Structure Design in 1998 after more than two decades with Holmes Consulting Group.

Oxford Terrace, Christchurch – Part of the design team restoring this earthquake-damaged heritage building to modern seismic standards.

Te Papa, Wellington – Contributed to the engineering design of one of New Zealand’s first major base-isolated buildings, which performed exceptionally well in the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake.
