TUVALU COMMUNITY CHURCH: SMART TIMBER ENGINEERING TO BENEFIT THE TUVALUAN COMMUNITY
The Tuvaluan community wanted to build a church and community centre in Henderson, West Auckland. This predominantly timber structure uses curved glu-laminated timber portal arches, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and conventional light timber framing. Where exposed, these structural elements help to created a warm, durable environment.
Benefits of having us on the team:
-
Timber presents detailing challenges particularly in terms of fire and connections. This requires careful engineering. Our design is sympathetic to structural loads, aesthetics and buildability.
-
We proactively work with the fabricator and contractor, visiting the factory and site to ensure components such as the arches are made and installed correctly.
-
Our knowledge of which timber products work best under which applications means we design solutions using products that are most appropriate for each purpose.
