PNG 2015 PACIFIC GAMES FACILITIES: LEAVING A LASTING LEGACY

We were part of the consortium that successfully delivered design services for three sporting facilities worth over $250 million for the 2015 Pacific Games held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from 4-18 July 2015, namely:

  • The 15,000sqm Taurama Aquatic Centre & Indoor Sports Complex – comprising an Olympic sized swimming pool, a 25m warm-up pool, an indoor arena with 6 volleyball and basketball courts and additional martial arts facilities. This was designed to meet international standards. The structural highlights include seven 86m long tubular steel triangular roof trusses that were delivered by a local steel fabricator.

  • The Sir John Guise Outdoor Stadium redevelopment – incorporating a full seismic upgrade of the existing grandstand and new grandstands to increase the seating capacity from 900 to 15,000. The upgrade met IAAF international standards for track and field competitions.

  • The Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium redevelopment – which involved increasing the seating capacity from approximately 600 to 1,900, a seismic upgrade of the existing structure and a refurbishment to provide improved flexible sporting facilities.

Benefits of having us on the team:
  • Achieving the tight, immovable deadline, which allowed the 2015 Pacific Games to start on time and without hiccup. We had to complete the design phase in 9 months – three months less than a project of this size and scope would be expected to take. Key to this was teamwork. We worked collaboratively in a large team and in a difficult environment.

  • Ensuring the truss system for the Taurama complex was constructed and fitted correctly and on time. We worked closely with the local structural steel manufacturer and installer who had never before constructed something of this size and complexity, upskilling their team and performing a monitoring/quality control role during installation.

Whilst working on the other sporting facilities for the 2015 Pacific Games, the Games Organising Committee asked us to undertake structural design for the Rita Flynn Netball Stadium, a new $30m international level facility with seating capacity for 3,000 people. The structural highlights include six 44m long steel roof trusses that were shipped from China.

All of the structure, including the roof and the glass walls are exposed. The structure is the architecture.
