Tiago Almeida

Senior structural engineer with more than 10 years' experience (including six in Portugal). I have led the structural team on large-scale projects such as the Taurama Aquatic Centre and Indoor Sports Complex and have designed structures for buildings in New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Europe and Africa.

My role is to deliver structural engineering solutions that work for you. That requires me to listen, understand (or help you clarify) your requirements and question, discuss options and advise where appropriate.

You can expect me to take a holistic, collaborative approach to your project because our work relates to that of your other consultants. If I know what’s driving the architect’s design, and what others are looking to achieve, I then know what options are open to me and my team.

Having worked on a number of large scale commercial, industrial, retail, mixed-use, education, sports and health projects, a number of which are multi-storey, I’ve had the opportunity to solve engineering problems through new approaches. I always look for alternatives that offer a better solution. For example, as lead structural engineer for the consortium that successfully delivered design services for three sporting facilities worth over $250 million for the 2015 Pacific Games held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea in 2015, I found a way to complete the design phase in 9 months – three months less than a project of this size and scope would be expected to take. This involved working closely with a local structural steel manufacturer and installer on the truss system, who had never before constructed something of this size and complexity, upskilling their team and performing a monitoring/quality control role during installation.

If you choose to work with me you can expect me to be flexible, collaborative and easy to deal with. You will benefit from my critical thinking and solid engineering background.

Work highlights have included:
  • Designing the structure for an incubator facility for the University of Porto. This involved months of meetings and coordination to ensure all services could fit into very tight spaces and to allow for future flexibility for building services.
  • Designing the structure for a metro station in Porto. This was an above ground station, whose architectural design required the structure to be well concealed. It was a challenge to hide the connections but we did it by working collaboratively and persistently with the architect and liaising with the structural steel manufacturer to ensure our design could be built.
  • Designing the structure for a new 40-storey, highrise mixed use retail, office and residential building in Auckland’s CBD. This is set to be a landmark building with a unique identity.

My passions can be summed up as the three T’s – tennis, technology and travel. Key destinations on my bucket list include the Pacific Islands and South East Asia.
